| Villa Castrum |
Situated in the locality of Barberino Val d’Elsa at the top of a hill, some 310 metres above sea level, there is a group of houses and a Villa which still retain the original name of the old ‘Castello di Cortine’
|
|
The word ‘Cortine’ derives from the neo-Latin term ‘curtis’ or court and was first recorded in 1037.
This ancient Tuscan castle stands among vineyards, olive groves and woods on the water course dividing the Elsa and Pesa valleys celebrating the longstanding relationship between Nature and an extraordinary people.
Etruscan roads ran through these lands and are still abundantly evident in Cortine as are the legends of the Roman conquerors.
In Medieval Tuscany, Cortine was an important meeting point between Florence and the Via Francigena for Rome.
Its proximity was such that it witnessed the deadly dual between the municipal authority of Florence and the aristocratic pride of Semifonte.

This Villa is a splendid example of the ’Lorraine‘ architecture, worthy of the famous Medici Villas so characteristic of the 16th Century; This impressive structure maintains intimate links to its agricultural roots still featuring the old oil mill within its walls. The villa takes its name from the Castle (Castrum )of Cortine.
Entering through the large main gate one reaches a private parking area which also has an independent entrance facing the first of several gardens reserved for guests of the Villa. The imposing façade of the Villa built entirely in stone, welcomes its guests with a sense of beauty and soundness. Large windows flood the Villa with natural light whilst an immaculate landscaped garden, rich in a variety of plants surrounds the Villa.
